Academy Coach Profiles
Sean Pettinger - Head Instructor
Sean began his hockey career with the Swan Valley Stampeders of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) in 2002. He played four seasons there before accepting a hockey scholarship to the University of Wisconsin- River Falls. In River Falls, Sean played for four years before graduating. He then moved back to Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba while playing for Manitoba’s Allan Cup team- The Southeast Prairie Thunder.
Upon moving back to Winnipeg, Sean continues to be extensively involved instructing players while working at The Rink Training Centre, which he has done for the past 8 years. During this time, he has worked with a wide range of levels including numerous midget, junior, and pro players while focusing on power skating and skill development. Aside from this, he has also been involved in coaching spring hockey with various teams as well as being an instructor for five years at the Impact Hockey School in Brandon, Manitoba.
Sean focuses on a technical skating and skill breakdown with players before applying these skills in a tactical situation. He is detail oriented and provides feedback to all players in a positive and productive approach. He is looking forward to helping and instructing players at the Starbuck Hockey Academy.
Blair Adamson - Instructor
After playing 3 years of AAA midget with the Central Plains Capitals, Blair split his time between the Saskatchewan and Manitoba Junior Hockey Leagues with the Melfort Mustangs, Waywayseecappo Wolverines, and the Neepawa Natives. A highlight of Blair’s hockey career was being chosen to represent the MJHL at the Viking Cup in Camrose , Alberta. Following his junior hockey career he spent the better part of a decade playing competitive fastball, which allowed him to participate in the Canada Games, as well as numerous Western Canadian and National championships.
As an instructor, Blair believes in advancing your child’s skills through the use of positive feedback and direct coaching. Work ethic and attitude are skills that can be taught and these are the most important skills that your child will develop at Starbuck Hockey Academy.
Amanda Monney - Instructor
Growing up Amanda played boys hockey in the R.M of Macdonald as there were no girls teams in the area. At 17 she was 1 of 10 female players selected from Manitoba to play on Team Western and they won bronze at the U-18 Nationals. She also represent Team Manitoba 5 times at the Senior Women’s Nationals. Amanda joined the University of Manitoba Bison Program in 2004/05. During her 5 years with the Bison Program they won 3 bronze at the CIS National Championship, won the Canada West Title in her final year. Amanda was also an assistant captain in her final year and was an Academic All Canadian 3 times. Amanda began playing ball hockey and has represented Team Manitoba 5 Times at Nationals.
As an instructor, Amanda has worked with a wide range of abilities, from beginners to provincial team athletes. She was one of the lead instructors for the Mini-U Hockey Camps, worked at numerous Esso Female Fun Day Hockey Camps and was a bench coach/instructor for the Program of Excellence several times. Amanda believes that hockey is an amazing sport that provided her with many opportunities to learn life lessons travel and build lifelong friendships. As an instructor she works hard to help build her athlete’s skills both on and off ice including: teamwork, sportsmanship, perseverance, self-reflection, and goal setting.
Tim Morison - Goalie Instructor
Tim played two years of AAA before moving on to the MMJHL. After his playing days were over Tim worked with Goalie coach Rick St. Croix for ten years before establishing TMGoaltending, an elite goaltending school. Tim has excelled as a coach working with goalies all over rural Manitoba. Tim has been part of many championship teams while coaching the Pembina Valley Hawks. Tim has been an assistant/goalie coach where his team has won multiple AAA Bantam/Midget championship titles including a silver and bronze at the Western Canadian Championships. Tim has produced top notch goalies who have received scholarships and top goalie awards. This past year Tim had one of his students sign his first NHL contract, an accomplishment he is very proud to be a part of. Tim has been recognized as a finalist for the Coaching Manitoba Excellence award on multiple occasions.
A main staple in Tim’s training is advanced video technology. Tim’s unique, progressive, repetition based training regimen equips students with the fundamental skill set that they need to be successful.
Jay Dewis -
Growing up in Portage la Prairie, Jay played goal for the Terriers system throughout his minor hockey days. He later transitioned to forward for his Arthur Meighen High School team that went on to win the League Championship his graduating year. Jay understands competing at a top level – he has played competitive fastpitch over the past two decades. After beginning his teaching career at Portage Collegiate, Jay took over their baseball program and guided the team to 5 MHSAA Provincial Finals in 8 seasons, while winning two Provincial titles. Having the opportunity to coach students in both an academic and athletic setting here at Starbuck Hockey Academy has been a great fit.
Over the past couple of seasons, Jay has coached his son in the Portage Minor Hockey Association. During this time he has had the opportunity to learn from experienced coaches, work with young players and develop a passion for coaching hockey. As an instructor, Jay believes that work ethic and attention to detail are cornerstones for improving as a player. The focus on skating and skill development are at the forefront of every session but Jay believes students must be given an opportunity to apply these skills in small game settings. Jay looks forward to helping usher in the next wave of hockey players from Manitoba.
Brett Legault – Instructor
Growing up in Carman, Brett played for the Cougars throughout his minor hockey days. After graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, he decided to travel and ended up living in South Korea for a year and a half, where he was able to play hockey with people from Russia, England, America, Sweden and Korea. It was while living in South Korea that Brett recognized his passion for hockey and teaching. Having the opportunity to do both at Starbuck Hockey Academy has been a dream come true.
For the past three years, Brett has coached his son in the South Winnipeg Hockey Association. During this time he has had the opportunity to learn from experienced coaches, work with young players and develop a passion for coaching. As an instructor, Brett believes that attitude and work ethic are the cornerstones for improving as a player. The intense focus on skating and skill development are a the forefront of every practice but Brett believes the students must still be given an opportunity to apply these skills in small game settings. Brett looks forward to helping usher in the next wave of hockey players from Manitoba that have that Prairie background of teamwork, positivity and leadership.
